Visiting this website

When you visit, your browser sends technical data to the web server, including the requested address, time, browser information, and IP address. This website is hosted by IONOS. We also use Cloudflare to deliver and protect the website. These providers may process technical connection data, including your IP address. This processing supports the secure and reliable operation of the website (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR).

IONOS provides information about its processing. Cloudflare may also process data outside the EU; details are available in Cloudflare’s privacy policy. Depending on the security features enabled, Cloudflare may set necessary security cookies. Access and security logs are retained according to the hosting and security services used and their configured deletion periods. You can request information through the contact form linked above.

Visitor statistics

We maintain our own server-side statistics to understand how our website is used and which articles readers access. We store the date of the visit, the page path without URL parameters, the number of views, the user agent sent by the browser, and, where available through a verified Cloudflare connection, the country code. Automated visits may also be included.

To group visits by day, we use a secret key to generate a hash from the date, IP address, and user agent. The IP address itself is not stored in these statistics. The identifier changes daily; it is pseudonymous and is not treated as fully anonymous. We do not set analytics cookies or store identifiers in local browser storage for this purpose. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in operating the website and adapting it to readers’ needs (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR).

The statistics are stored on our server and accessed through a password-protected administration area. Records older than 90 days are deleted when the next visit is recorded. These statistics do not reliably identify individual people. You may object to this processing on grounds relating to your particular situation.

Fonts

We serve fonts together with the website. Your browser does not connect to Google Fonts to load them.

Search, bookmarks, audio, and feedback

Article search runs in your browser. “Save” explains how to bookmark a page in your browser. Unikaro does not maintain a reading list or store your bookmark choices. “Listen” uses available local system voices on your device in the article’s language.

When sharing, you can copy an article link or open a service such as WhatsApp or your email application. The service is opened only when you select its link. Its privacy terms then apply.

“Helpful” uses neither a recognition cookie nor local browser storage. When you submit feedback, a random token is generated and held only in the memory of the open page. Your vote and an article-specific hash of that token are stored in our database. You can withdraw the vote while that page remains open. This processing serves our legitimate interest in evaluating feedback on articles (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR).

Contact form

When you use our contact form, we store your email address, optional first name, selected topic, message, submission time, and processing status in a database on our server. We use these details to handle your inquiry. The legal basis is Article 6(1)(b) GDPR where the inquiry concerns a contract or steps before entering into a contract; otherwise, it is our legitimate interest in responding under Article 6(1)(f) GDPR. Contacting us does not subscribe you to the newsletter.

A session cookie protects the form against unauthorized requests. To limit automated messages, we store a value derived from the IP address using a secret key, together with a request counter; we do not store the IP address in plain text for this purpose. Inquiry details are needed to handle your request and, where applicable, to meet statutory retention requirements or resolve legal claims. You can request deletion through our contact form.

Newsletter

When you subscribe, we process your email address, newsletter language, signup time, subscription status, and the version and wording of your consent. We use these details to email you about new Unikaro articles. The legal basis is your consent (Article 6(1)(a) GDPR). Subscribing is optional; you can use the website without a newsletter subscription.

Your signup is stored in a database on our server. Email confirmation (double opt-in) is not currently configured. We do not use tracking of individual newsletter opens or clicks. We use Brevo to manage and send the newsletter. Recipient data needed for delivery is transferred to and processed by Brevo. For more information, see Brevo’s privacy policy.

You can withdraw your consent at any time with effect for the future, including through our contact form. Withdrawal does not affect the lawfulness of processing before you withdrew consent. Your data is needed for delivery until you unsubscribe. Evidence of consent and an unsubscribe record may be retained beyond that point where necessary to demonstrate consent or respect your decision to unsubscribe. The basis is our legitimate interest under Article 6(1)(f) GDPR.

To prevent automated signups, we also process a value derived from the IP address using a secret key and a request counter. The IP address is not stored in plain text for this purpose. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in preventing abuse (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR).
